A “Clean Up the World Day 2011” campaign was launched in Tan Phu district, Dong Nai province on September 18 by the Dong Nai Youth Union in collaboration with Department of Natural Resources and Environment and Tan Phu district’s People’s Committee.
The campaign on the theme “Our Place, Our Planet, Our Responsibility” attracted the participation of representatives from departments, agencies, students of Faculty of Biological and Environmental Engineering – Lac Hong University and over 2000 youth members. The theme highlights actions taken by individual in communities, thus making an impact on the globe.
Clean Up the World Day established in 1989 rose from Clean Up Sydney HarbourDay movement. The event founded by Ian Kierman was first launched 1993 in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and popularized across the world. Clean Up the World is an annual international campaign that attracts hundreds of millions of people from over 130 countries participating each year.
Vietnam has joined in the Clean Up the World Day campaign since 1994. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will yearly select a province to co-organize the launching ceremony of Clean Up the World Day. The event has received a great response from students and people from all walks of life. It also helps to raise people’s awareness of protecting the environment.
After the launching ceremony, participants cleaned up the environment and collected garbage at their localities and some areas.
