As the first university in Dong Nai Province, after 14 years in operation, Lac Hong University has been establishing its prestigious brand name in training. The results the school has achieved is the answer to a right direction that it has taken for the past time. That is living with businesses. To find out the answer to the success of this direction, we had a talk with Dr. Dang Duy So - Director of the Center for International Relations, Overseas Study and Employment Consultancy - Lac Hong University.
Q: Teacher ! Why has Lac Hong University chosen the policy to connect it with businesses?
A: Well, in fact, many graduates can not find jobs due to the training programs of most universities. They just put a stress on theory and students lack a lot of working skills. Many businesses have spent no small amount of money for retraining programs before accepting them to work. And this is a stinging question of the whole society. To address that, as a young school - Lac Hong University, for its survival and long-term development, it is imperative to connect closely with places that receive students after their graduation.
Our university has clearly defined it is a business that goes abreast with the school during the development process. Without businesses, students have no places to take internships and to work. It is also a subject for the school to build successfully its model "School and businesses doing scientific research together and applying them”. The business is also a place to accept graduates and give exact feedback for the school's training so that they can meet social needs. Definitely, without businesses, there are no research topics, no scholarships for students to study abroad, and no postgraduates.
"Living with businesses" is a proposed measure in the process of building our school’s curricular. Reality has proven this is an absolutely right direction.
Q: So, what measures has the school taken to implement the training policy responding to social needs?
A: Lac Hong is the first school to give students opportunities to take internship. Apprenticeship program of students in enterprises will last for 6 months (for those who have accumulated points below 7.0) and 4 months (for those who have accumulated points from 7.0 and above). The amount of prescribed working time is enough for businesses to fully understand students, recruit and help them acquire various skills such as communication skills, planning skills, time management skills, teamwork skills, report writing and presentation skills and so on.
The school has also established the Student Supporting Board and Business Relations, including 16 teachers (11 of them in charge of apprenticeship for 11 faculties) dealing with relationships with companies and factories to find out places of apprenticeship for senior students and to seek employment opportunities for graduates.
To arouse students’ potential and lead them towards the practical problems of production, every year Lac Hong University organizes two research conferences for students. After nearly 10 years of the campaign, so far it has organized 15 research conferences. Research topics are increasing in quantity and in quality with every passing day. Many research projects have been checked and taken over and put into use before students make presentations .
Also, it regularly offers students practical trips to industrial zones, seminars, exchanges between enterprises and students to facilitate their learning about the activities of companies, enterprises and businesses’ requirements.
Q: Could you please tell us some of the initial results of these measures?
A: Thanks to a specific action plan with specialized staff in apprenticeship and business relations since 2008, so far over 438 companies and factories have signed training cooperation programs with the school to use its human resources. According to statistics, every year, 438 businesses need 35 thousand graduates while each year the school has just over two thousand graduates. This shows that students of Lac Hong do not need to worry about jobs but strive to study to be able to reach high positions after graduation.
Statistics also showed that in 2010, of the 1,790 apprentices, 1,387 have signed labor contracts with businesses while still not graduated. The number of apprentices having jobs immediately makes up to 77,49%.
In the past four months in 2010, 55 businesses have made contacts with Student Supporting Board Lac Hong University to recruit 165 engineers and new graduates.
The success of the robocon team in 2010 has brought training cooperation and the use of human resource has doubled. For example, LS Cable and Olympus companies has completely cooperated with Lac Hong University in recruitment with numbers from 50 to 70 engineers, bachelors annually.
That scholarships worth hundreds of VND million are annually offered to poor students by businesses is also good evidence of long-term cooperration between the University and Enterprise.
Q: Thank you very much Dr. Dang Duy So for spending time with us. Surely enough, with its location between 70 industrial zones in Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria Vung Tau along with the strategy of "Living with businesses," Lac Hong University will fulfill its training tasks, meeting social needs in accordance with education mission that the school has proposed
“Training human resources
Breeding ground for young talent
Graduates get jobs immediately without retraining program”
